Your home away from home

Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto is North America’s only remaining private golf club established by women for women. Founded in 1924, it was born out of the belief that magic is created when women gather together to play, to learn, and inspire. Ladies’ is a place where every woman is welcomed, encouraged and spoiled. Where fun is had, friendships are discovered, and life is a little more fabulous.

We know that excellent service is essential to a great experience. That’s why our staff is carefully selected and trained to understand the importance of going the extra distance every day, from knowing Members by name to happily meeting their individual needs. That’s what makes Ladies’ truly different.

What does it take to be the first female
anything? It takes grit, and it takes grace.

A history of grit and grace

When Ada Mackenzie founded Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto in 1924, it fulfilled a dream she had nurtured since starting to play golf at age 10. Although it wasn’t easy then for female golfers to get access to tee times and practice facilities, she endured and, at age 27, captured the first of her five Canadian “Open” Amateur Championships and her five Canadian “Closed” Amateur Championships. With these and numerous other championship wins, she became known as one of the best female golfers in North America and England.

Fulfilling her dream to create a club specifically for women players wasn’t easy. The farm estate that became home to the Club was a long way from Toronto, and raising funds to support the Club was no small feat. But with the same grit and grace she had applied to the game, she pursued her dream and won. The result was a new beginning for women’s golf in Toronto.

In 1933, Ada won every major golf championship in Canada and was named female athlete of the year by the Canadian Press. She continued to play well into her senior years, winning eight Canadian Ladies’ Senior’s Golf Association Championships and the Ontario Seniors title, and playing her last competitive game at the age of 78. She was inducted into the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame in 1955 and the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1971.

Better by design

Unparalleled golf course design is at the heart of Ladies’ success, thanks to the vision of Stanley Thompson, renowned golf course architect and co-founder of the American Society of Golf Course Architects. A fine amateur golfer, Stanley is widely regarded as a leader in golf course design throughout Canada, the United States, the Caribbean and South America.

Thompson-designed courses are consistently listed among the top 100 courses in Canada, including his spectacular mountain course designs for the Banff Springs Hotel Golf Course and Jasper Park Golf Course, Highlands Links (Nova Scotia), St George’s (Toronto) and Capilano (Vancouver). Stanley was elected to the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame in 1980.

Celebrating nature, celebrating life

The beauty of our natural surroundings plays a vital role in the experience we offer at Ladies’. That’s why we’re doing all we can to protect it.

Ladies’ Golf Club of Toronto has achieved designation as a “certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary” for wildlife, through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program for golf courses. Certification is based on environmental planning; wildlife and habitat management; outreach and education; chemical use reduction and safety; and water quality management. We are one of less than 1,000 golf courses around the world to hold this impressive and important title.
